Stroke Interest Group, Welsh Branch of the Geriatrics Society
The Stroke Interest Group (SIG) of the British Geriatrics Society, Wales was formed in September 1998.
The broad aims of the group are:
- To facilitate development of evidence based stroke care throughout Wales.
- To disseminate information about clinically relevant stroke research promptly to all professionals involved in the management of stroke patients.
- To act as a forum where the Welsh stroke physicians can exchange ideas and showcase good practice.
- To advise the Welsh Assembly Government on policies related to stroke care.
The SIG meets twice a year, a day before the Spring (first week of March in north Wales) and Autumn (first week of September in South/West Wales) meetings of the British Geriatrics Society, Wales. The meetings contain a Continuing Medical Education (CME) section, lasting for an hour, where one or two invited speakers give lectures on recent advances in stroke care. This section is open to non-members including all doctors and multidisciplinary staff provided they register their name in advance. A business meeting follows the CME lectures.
The SIG organizes the annual one day Welsh Stroke Meeting in the third week of
November every year. The meetings have been highly successful over the past
four years and speakers have included some of the leading researchers in the field
of stroke. The meeting is highly subsidized and is open to all health
professionals. The SIG publishes the Welsh Stroke Bulletin twice a year.
The SIG also awards the Bim Bhowmick Bursary once a year to a deserving
Welsh health professional who intends conduct research into Stroke or undertakes
eductional activities aimed at enhancing his/her knowledge about stroke.
