Speakability (Action for Dysphasic Adults)
Founded in 1979 as "Action for Dysphasic Adults", Speakability is the national charity specifically set up to support people with aphasia (whatever the cause), and their relatives and carers.
Since we believe it's important for real practical experience to drive our direction and decision-making, we encourage people with aphasia to get involved in the management of Speakability - as volunteers, as members of staff and as trustees.
Speakability offers impartial advice and information, both through its help-line and website, and distributes its own fact-sheets and low-cost publications. We are also developing a national network of Self-Help Groups (90 plus to date) - run by people with aphasia for people with aphasia. Each group offers individuals the chance to share experiences, grow in self-confidence, rebuild communication skills and make new friends in a supportive environment. Groups are themselves also encouraged to get together at Regional Meetings. Once established, these groups are self-financing and serviced by trained administrative volunteers to keep them running smoothly.
In addition, Speakability also has a campaigning role, working to improve services for people with aphasia, by influencing individuals, organisations and statutory bodies. Wherever possible, people with aphasia are consulted to ensure their views are fully represented at the highest level.
