NHS Stroke Improvement Programme
The Stroke Improvement Programme (SIP) was set up to support the development of stroke care networks and the implementation of the National Stroke Strategy.
Stroke care networks are the central vehicle for supporting services and guiding the developments required by the strategy. The role of the networks is to improve the way that services are planned and delivered for both stroke survivors, carers and staff. Stroke care networks will help to guide the commissioning process through providing clinical expertise; support service improvement across the whole pathway of care; and enable ‘clinical networking’ – vital communication between the different stages of the ‘patient pathway’.
SIP works closely with the Department of Health, primary care trusts, local authorities, NHS provider trusts, networks, ambulance services, voluntary sector providers, and stroke survivors and carers to support the delivery of the National Stroke Strategy.
SIP will also offer service improvement work in demonstration sites in:- managing risk – focussing on the identification and treatment of atrial fibrillation; developing services for rapid assessment and treatment of those with TIA symptoms; developing acute care for stroke; bridging the gap between health and social care; and exploring how to meet the challenges of the strategy for imaging services.
SIP is part of NHS Improvement, a national improvement programme working with clinical networks and NHS organisations to transform, deliver, and sustain improvements across the entire pathway of care in cancer, diagnostics, heart and stroke services.
