Different Strokes

Different Strokes was set up by younger stroke survivors for younger stroke survivors of working age and below.

At present, we provide 4 main services.

  • A unique telephone StrokeLine (telephone 0845 1307172) which allows those who have experienced stroke to share experiences with survivors.
  • A 'stroke survival pack', which contains basic information about stroke, together with information on how to access benefits, get help from social services and get more medical information, together with advice on sex after a stroke and dealing with psychological effects of a change in lifestyle.
  • A national network of exercise classes for those recovering from stroke. Each class is organised and administered by volunteers (usually a stroke survivor and/or their family) and taken by a qualified instructor. For the period 2003-2006 this project has been funded by the Big Lottery Fund.
  • A vibrant website, including a message board where stroke survivors and carers can exchange information and provide mutual support.

Different Strokes is also planning more specialised work with child stroke survivors, and children at risk of stroke, and their families.
