The British Psychological Society (BPS) is the representative body for psychologists and psychology in the UK. By its Royal Charter the Society is charged with national responsibility for the development, promotion and application of psychology for the public good.

It has three major aims:
  • to encourage the development of psychology as a scientific discipline and an applied profession
  • to raise standards of training and practice in the application of psychology
  • to raise public awareness of psychology and increase the influence of psychological practice in society

Psychologists working with stroke patients may be members of specialist Divisions of the Society, such as the Divisions of Clinical Psychology, Neuropsychology, Counselling Psychology or Health Psychology. These Divisions will make recommendations for standards of professional practice in relation to aspects of stroke care. The Society also provides a Register of Chartered Psychologists, which is available for the public to check the qualifications of practising psychologists and a Directory of Psychologists offering services to the public.
